I went salsa dancing for the first time (in public) this last Friday, and it was a gas! I think as long as you're honest with your partner (tell them you're new, but not that you suck), most experienced dancers will be very patient, and will teach you a thing or two. It was really fun, and the music is great!
If you're interested in something and don't want to spend a lot of money, I highly recommend checking out the community colleges in your area. I know rates have gone up, but when I was going classes were $13 a unit, and even with other fees you're not going to find anything as cheap.
I'm going to a Bhangra night in a few weeks, and I'm already excited, even if I have NO idea what I'm doing!

You left out finding a place with a good polka band. There must be a Polish community somewhere in LA hosting a dance. Stolat!

Oh! Also, hot guys will ask you to dance at Salsa. I know you're all coupled, but even so, it's a nice perk. There's also great people watching, because cougars love salsa.
